IATF 16949 is the international quality management system standard for the automotive supply chain, published by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) in October 2016. It is applied as a supplement to ISO 9001:2015, not a replacement, adding automotive requirements for defect prevention, reducing variation and waste, and meeting customer-specific requirements.
In short: ISO 9001 plus the automotive industry's own rules, audited under a certification scheme the carmakers control.
What Does IATF 16949 Mean?
The name combines the issuing body, the International Automotive Task Force, with the number of the document it replaced. The IATF is a group of automotive manufacturers and their trade associations. It first created ISO/TS 16949 in 1999, with ISO's quality management committee, to harmonize the different assessment and certification systems across the automotive supply chain. Revised editions followed in 2002 and 2009.
IATF 16949:2016 cancelled and replaced ISO/TS 16949:2009. It follows the structure and requirements of ISO 9001:2015 and cannot be used on its own: an organization implements both together. Together with each customer's specific requirements, it defines the quality management system for organizations making automotive production, service and accessory parts.
Beyond ISO 9001, the automotive requirements lean on established industry methods such as advanced product quality planning (APQP), the production part approval process (PPAP), control plans and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA). The standard also expects a structured problem-solving approach to corrective action, so that fixes are permanent and problems do not recur.
IATF 16949 vs ISO 9001
| ISO 9001:2015 | IATF 16949:2016 | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Generic — any sector | Automotive production, service and accessory parts |
| Stand-alone? | Yes | No — applied together with ISO 9001:2015 |
| Customer-specific requirements | Not built in | Built in: OEM requirements apply alongside the standard |
| Industry methods | Not prescribed | APQP, PPAP, control plans, FMEA and similar |
| Certification | Accredited certification bodies | IATF-contracted certification bodies, monitored by five IATF oversight offices |
How Does IATF 16949 Certification Work?
Certification is issued only by certification bodies under contract with the IATF, following the IATF's own certification rules rather than only the generic ISO accreditation standard. The IATF's five oversight offices monitor those bodies and their auditors through witness audits and office assessments, and the IATF controls how its third-party auditors are qualified.
The IATF publishes a certificate validity check on its website, so a buyer can confirm that a supplier's certificate is current rather than relying on a PDF copy.
What IATF 16949 Means When Choosing a Supplier
- Whether a supplier needs IATF 16949 is set by the customer: check your OEM's customer-specific requirements before making it a condition of the RFQ.
- Confirm the certificate is valid and covers the site and processes that will make your parts.
- Ask which automotive deliverables come with production approval — for example a PPAP submission, a control plan and first-article inspection results.
- For prototypes and bridge tooling, agree up front which production-approval documents will be needed later, so the tooling and process are built to support them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IATF 16949?
It is the quality management system standard for organizations that make automotive production, service and accessory parts. Published by the International Automotive Task Force in 2016, it replaced ISO/TS 16949 and is implemented together with ISO 9001:2015.
What does IATF 16949 mean?
IATF stands for International Automotive Task Force, a group of automotive manufacturers and their trade associations. 16949 carries over the number of ISO/TS 16949, the automotive technical specification the IATF developed with ISO in 1999 and replaced with IATF 16949 in 2016.
Is IATF 16949 the same as ISO 9001?
No. ISO 9001 is a generic quality management standard for any sector. IATF 16949 adds automotive-specific requirements on top of ISO 9001:2015, including customer-specific requirements and industry methods such as PPAP and FMEA, and is audited only by IATF-contracted certification bodies.
